Hello, aside from concerns about kimono length, do tall maikos and geikos have any disadvantages compared to their counterparts? I don’t know how tall geiko Mametama is, but she seems to be one of the taller ones, and I seem to think that her height has not affected her career? New maiko Hanae of Tsurui appears to be pretty tall too. Would you happen to know how tall she is?original (opens in a new tab)

Hello there, Gion Odori question. I realised in the 80’s and 90’s, “Shojo” and “Ohikae” in Maiko/Minarai outfits were booked for tea ceremony along with an actual Maiko/Geiko. Do you know if they were just local girls studying tea ceremony? To pad the numbers? It doesn’t seem that any of them became Maiko. I remember that in the 2000’s-2010s, retired GH Geiko were recruited for tea ceremony. Similar case? Thank you!original (opens in a new tab)

Genuine question. is the role of a geisha not, even in the smallest bit patriarchal? They are beautiful, yes, but can they develop their own personality without being ostracised, and does every geimaiko have to be elegant, feminine and docile? There must be a bit of oppression going on in the karyukai. and some of the rules applied to the lovely women there are absolutely ridiculous, literally.original (opens in a new tab)

I would imagine that the month when Miyako Odori is held is very stressful for both maiko and geiko. Especially when evening engagements still occur during this time. This being said, if an independent geiko has an exceptionally long day / night would she be able to spend the night at her affiliated okiya? Especially if she’s on again for performances the next day?original (opens in a new tab)

Do you know the proper reading for the nee toshikimi minarais geimei? I noticed you kind of forgot about her but shes adorable and I think her geimei is fumiyo or fumimomo? You can see her in their most recent post, shes really adorable and should be debuting around the same time as the other Miyagawacho girl as they completed their shikomi exams on the same date.original (opens in a new tab)

I have seen you have talked about Katsukiyo in the past as a formidable dancer of Kamishichiken and i have been trying to track video of her dancing down and i found this promotional spot of Kitano Odori 2018 ( https://share.google/zlvq15NBDyKsthkO5 ) where you can see an “"elderly”“ geiko at around the 6min time stamp doing a more masculine dance (maybe wild guess) And i dont think she is Katsukiyo..? Is it because if i recall correctly she passed in 2016? Because this woman truly striked me anoriginal (opens in a new tab)

I have always wondered why the girls want to work at Tama Okiya. I have heard good things about it, but what more about it?
My non-Japanese friend wants to work there, and I want to support her despite being worried. I believe that the journey will be harder for her as she does not know the language (Which is one of the most important things when considering work in Japan)
Is the Tama Okiya a good fit? I don’t know… I suggested Furisode-san because it is more foreigner friendly and also that moriginal (opens in a new tab)

Hi i have been looking at old geisha postcard as i do like this taisho(?) look but i was wondering if my eyes tricked me because the kimono seems more “loose”(?) on them that nowdays maiko maybe you could tell me why? Thank you for answering my question about the bira! One follow up question—Fujichiyo wore a bira for her erikae; would that have been a personal choice or a choice by the okiya? I really love getting to see bira on geiko (like at tea ceremonies), adding movement to their hair 😊 Another question I had—is it only Gion Kobu that does the two (red and white) kasane eri during misedashi? it seems that all the other districts only do the whiteoriginal (opens in a new tab)

Hi Justine! Hope that you’ve been well. I came across a video that matyanel KYOTO CH posted and saw Yuzuha and Haruchizu when they were both still maikos. I noticed that Yuzuha’s darai obi had a kamon on it that resembled the Nishimura kamon. Why wasn’t she wearing a Tama darai obi like Haruchizu and whose kamon was that?original (opens in a new tab)

hello, i love your blog and it is so helpful. you’re the best resource in English that ive found online for accurate information on maiko/geiko that isn’t run by a tourism/travel agency trying to promote themselves. i’m sorry to ask what must be a simple question, but i was hoping you could clear something up for me. i keep seeing online in english that kyoto is the only place that still has a maiko apprenticeship system, is this true? or do maiko exist outside of kyoto?original (opens in a new tab)

Hi Justine! A little question if you don’t mind - I’ve noticed that the shoes worn with kimono (geta and zōri) seem to be worn with the heel of the foot overhanging the back of the shoe. Is there a reason for this? Thank you for running this blog ✨original (opens in a new tab)

Hey Justine, I’m kinda confused about the transition from a second year Maiko to a third year. Can you help me? 1. When a Maiko goes to her second year, does she still have the shidare from the daikan? Or is it shorter than from one exceeding her chin? 2. Do second year Maiko still have their collars a mix of red and white? 3. When a second year reaches third year, do they change their hairstyle from Wareshinobu to Ofuku?original (opens in a new tab)

Hello Ms. Justine! Regarding kimonos, I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen brown being worn except for Mameroku who I’ve seen in it. Does the color brown signify anything aside from the seasonal appropriateness of the color? Mameroku certainly wears it well. But of course I am a bit bias as she is one of my favorites lol.original (opens in a new tab)

Hiya! I went on a bit of a rabbit hole a few days ago and wanted to ask about kikunami. I noticed in your list of all the Hanafusa geimaiko she wasn’t listed, but Kikumi was. Hello! something I’ve been wondering when looking at photos from kotohajime, where everyone always looks very cold, is why people in Gion don’t wear coats or haori (I can maybe understand why they don’t wear haori as it might be too casual, but michiyuki or douchugi would be fine, as they are worn when it rains) I know that outside of the kagai, in some traditional circles or settings, women are encouraged to always wear some kind of coat when going outside in kimono (instead of “obitsuke”) thouoriginal (opens in a new tab)

So, I believe someone may have said this before but I checked out the Asahi Shimbun article about Taka (多香) and her hair being styled in Sakkō before her erikae. Happy belated birthday! Hope that you had a great one! Asuha wore the kuromontsuki that Tama san wore at her erikae and I noticed that the black part of the kimono is not just plain black. It has what appears to be some kind of etching on it? I saw it on the kuromontsuki that Mameju wore on her erikae too. It’s beautiful! You can really see it in the sunlight. Is it a special kind of kimono? I don’t think that I’ve seen it on others before.original (opens in a new tab)
