Howdy doody I was reading lesson seven, and it brought something back up I’ve been thinking about for a while now. You mention orcs specifically as an example. A while back I went on a little trip, and took a book from my childhood with me to read on the train. Magic, mayhem, “demons” (pokemons), and little white boy that saves the world from big bad orcs. How do you tell if an author is using orcs, or using orcs to…gah I don’t know how to phrase it. Make digs at Black folk? Villainise them! Thaoriginal ↗

Any thoughts on a setting with both sapient and non-sapient dragons? I was working on a fantasy setting where both intelligent, speaking dragons and feral, animalistic ones both exist, and both kinds have both friendly and hostile ones, with sapient dragons having kind and gentle ones (a la Draco from Dragonheart) and evil, tyrannical ones (a la Smaug from the Hobbit), while non-sapient dragons have aggressive, dangerous ones but also tamable ones that can be trained and ridden as mounts. I kindoriginal ↗

If a human had a tail would the spine curve be different? Does it matter if the tail is long or short? I’m trying to design what a human being would look like with a stubby to long tail and the problem I keep coming back to is how the spine and buttocks is supposed to look to “compensate” the tail.original ↗

what kind of special care would an oviparous creature prematurely hatched from its egg need? cause in humans and other mammals the biggest threat to a premature infant is that their lungs aren’t fully mature yet so they collapse and the baby struggles to breathe, but since egg-layers don’t get oxygen through a placenta but get it through absorption through a semipermeable shell would they have a similar problem? in one of my settings there’s a subplot about a baby dragon prince broken out of hisoriginal ↗

Do you know anything about how primitive humans could hunt sauropod dinosaurs? I’m making a lost world/primal type setting where neolithic humans living in a world of dinosaurs, hunting them for food. Been trying to work out ways these peoples could hunt dinosaurs, though at a loss currently as to how they could take on something the size of an adult sauropod (brontosaurus/ brachiosaurus/ diplodocus/ etc…). For context for these primitive humans don’t really hunt sauropods often, mainly huntingoriginal ↗

So…Some forms of volcanic ash can be very basic\alcaline, well, ash in general is basic… but human PH tend to decrease with the decomposition process, sometimes to the point severe bruising can cause mild burns\itching, and it is possible to build resistence to cadaverine and putricine. It is possible for vultures to gain botulism resistence immunity not only through stomach acid but through the microbiom on their little bald heads. OK so I’m doing a thing involving a species which primarily communicates telepathically, they can still hear normal sound and still vocalize normally to some degree, but they have a very limited range of sounds they can make and therefore telepathic communication is the standard among them and for communicating with other species.
I was thinking of a disability analogous to being deaf/hard-of-hearing wherin some individuals of this species may have issues picking up those signals (they probabloriginal ↗

I’ve seen a lot of spec bio try to make semi-scientific explanations for dragons breathing fire, usually involving flammable gases or combustible venom like a spitting cobra mixed with a bombardier beetle, but how could you rationalize other types of breath weapons? Acid is easy, it could just be corrosive digestive fluids, and water could just be ingested and sprayed out forcibly, but attacks such as electric bolts or ice would be more difficult. Perhaps for “lightning breath” they could spew aoriginal ↗

I had an idea for something where two fantasy races – let’s say elf and dwarf, it’s not what I had in mind but it’s an easy example – are actually genetically the same kind of people; it’s just that the ovum determines which type of genes get expressed in the developing embryo. So a dwarf/elf pairing would result in either a dwarf or an elf, depending on which partner provided the ovum. And sometimes that process glitches, so you can, say, have someone who’s the offspring of two elves but happenoriginal ↗

How would you design a cyclops whose eye opens vertically? Just saw the new Odyessey movie and had mixed feelings about the cyclops, he looked a bit awkward and Picasso-ish with the sideways nose and lopsided face but I did appreciate how it kind of evokes a flounder and the vertical eye looked quite alien. I did get more of the vibe of him being born with a malformation or birth defect, as opposed to his species normally just looking like that (we don’t see any other cyclopses in this adaptatiooriginal ↗

for winged humanoids, shirts typically have an open back for the wings to go through, but i have trouble seeing how bras would work, specifically for species with wings that end below the bottom of the ribs. is there any way you see that clothing working naturally, or would any winged fantasy races lack breasts or ways to support them during flight?original ↗

Hello! The main character of my space opera is an avian human, who due to an accident 3 years before the start of the story, had the propatagium of his right wing torn, resulting in it drooping and chronic pain. He comes from an eugenicist society that looks down on disabled people and he himself has been solely valued for his beauty for most of his life. Because of that, it’s a part of himself he tries to hide, even if it causes him more complications like by strapping his wing together by wearoriginal ↗

I remember writing a setting once where a race of bugfolk, much like real life insects, had males that mated just once and then died shortly after, so since they only had a few weeks left to live anyway they sort of became something similar to the Winter Wolves from the Game of Thrones series, where they became the frontliners in battle and the defenders of their colony, eagerly sacrificing themselves for the greater good since they have already passed on their genes and are determined to protecoriginal ↗

I’ve been thinking a lot about non-human reproduction, mainly around those animals which die after reproducing and sexual cannibalism. How these would affect societies of any species that practiced these? As someone already mentioned octopi, I will instead ask about moths & mantis’s and the implications of their death-based mating habits? My caterpillar people have a lifecycle that see’s them transition from a sapient larvae to a non-sapient moth. The larval stage is prolonged, lasting around aoriginal ↗
